Dance Styles

Each style offers unique benefits and opportunities for personal growth, social interaction, and improved physical fitness.

Social Dances

Social dancing is all about having fun, making connections, and enjoying the rhythm of the music. I offer a variety of popular Social Dance Styles that cater to different tastes and preferences:

  • Hip movement is more noticeable in this style.

LA Salsa is a combination of different Caribbean styles including Rumba, Cha-cha-cha, Festejo and Mambo. It involves big, flashy movements with percussive footwork and is danced in a line moving to the feel of the music. It is a great style for beginners as the timing is easy to follow and provides an opportunity to learn how to dance different styles.

  • A fast tempo salsa with a strong afro-cuban influence.

Cuban Salsa is designed for couples and includes smooth, slow movements as you move around your partner in endless circles. The footwork is simple, but the hip movements are accentuated due to the driving motion of the knees. It is typically danced to Cuban or Timban music that allows the dancers to incorporate the Afro-Cuban dance movements.

  • Three-step with a Cuban hip motion, followed by a tap including a hip movement on the 4th beat.

Bachata is typically known as a very sensual dance to express one’s deepest feelings for the other. The main movement in Bachata is the fluent hip movements, twists and turns. It is very popular with beginners due to its easy footwork and slower, smooth movements.

  • More of a spot dance.

The Argentine Tango is a spontaneous dance, largely improvised on how the dancers interpret the music. It includes movements of walking, turning and pausing. Up close or at arms distance apart, the connection between dancers in Argentine tango is said to be more heart-to-heart, than their feet.

  • Fast spins, stretches and strong powerful lines.

Disco / Hustle dancing is typically used for social dancing such as at clubs or parties. It is a celebration of through dance and movement in every individual’s own style, which allows for freestyling with a small amount of choreography.

  • Strong side to side motion and 'dragged leg' with emphasis on counts 1 and 5.

The Merengue was first discovered in 1800 as a rural folk dance in the Dominican Republic and has since become the national dance of the land. It is a fun, fast-paced and easy dance made up of simple steps in which the dancers’ hold hands at chest-level and move in slow, sensuous semi-circles.

Social dancing is perfect for those looking to meet new people, develop social skills, and boost their confidence on the dance floor. My classes will teach you the essential steps, techniques, and etiquette to make your social dance experience enjoyable and rewarding.

Ballroom Latin

Ballroom Latin dances are characterized by their lively, passionate, and rhythmic movements. These dances are both energetic and expressive, allowing you to immerse yourself in the vibrant music and dynamic dance steps. The Ballroom Latin dance styles include:

  • Slower steps of the rumba and the mambo.

Cha-cha-cha has become a must-learn style for beginners due to its ease and eloquence. It closely resembles the Rumba and Mambo, but includes slower steps. It is a vibrant and playful dance for professionals as well as any social setting such as weddings and live bands.

  • Gentle, rhythmic action felt through the knees and ankles.

Samba is one of the most energetic dance styles involving fast-paced footwork, bouncing actions and rolling hip movements. It is performed to a quick beat and often features acrobatic movements such as tricks and turns. It can be danced with or without a partner, with solo dancing being popular during street festivals and parties.

  • Distinctive side-to-side hip movements.

Rumba is a captivating dance style involving smooth and flowy movements. It is also known as ‘The Dance of Love’, displaying strong partner connections with swaying hips and still upper bodies. It is very versatile and can be performed to slow Latin music or popular ballads, making it a popular choice for weddings and slow partner dancing.

  • Two Steps Spanish Dance Style.

Paso Doble, meaning “two-step” combines the brisk steps of a military march performed France and Spain. It is a competitive dance form with strict guidelines and complex choreography, requiring a lot of discipline to master. It is typically characterized by quick paced paso doble music.

  • Very happy, hoppy, energetic dance, with plenty of knee-lifting, bending, and rocking of the hips.

Jive is a lively, energetic dance which involves a wide range of movements including hip-rocking, knee-lifting, kicks and flicks. It is a very fast-paced and controlled dance performed to swing, jazz or rock music that adds the high energy needed for the movements. You will learn how to be light on your feet and imitate the quick bounce in the footwork.

Learning Ballroom Latin dances can improve your coordination, flexibility, and stamina while allowing you to express your emotions and creativity. These dances are also ideal for those interested in participating in dance competitions or showcases.

Ballroom Standard

Ballroom Standard dances are elegant and graceful, focusing on smooth movements and precise footwork. These dances require excellent posture, balance, and poise, making them perfect for those looking to develop a strong dance foundation. The Ballroom Standard dance styles include:

  • “Rise and fall” action.

The Slow-Waltz is perfect for beginners looking to learn the Waltz as it is slow and simple to follow. You will learn how to move your feet within a square on the floor, known as the Box Step. The movement in this fixed space creates an elegant appearance making it popular for private galas, weddings and country clubs.

  • Sharp, staccato movements and a passionate attitude.

Tango is one of the most passionate dance styles including sharp, staccato movements. It is one of the most popular partner dancers as it is vibrant, playful, improvised and displays a strong connection between dancers. It is great for wedding couples looking to make their first dance something to remember.

  • Pair up and move in a circular motion across the dance floor.

The Viennese Waltz is one of the oldest styles of ballroom dances in which the dancers perform the exact same steps. Dancers whirl around in small circles mixed with non-spinning steps to rotate direction in an air of grace and lightness. As there are not too many steps in this style, it is easier to notice if something is not right, making it one of the most difficult waltzes to master.

  • Long steps during the slower counts, and short steps during the faster counts.

The Slow Fox-trot is a romantic dance due to its slow, gliding flow comprised of simple walking steps. It is danced smoothly with no sudden jerking movements and can be performed to swing-style, Blues and chart music. Beginners can easily master the repeatable movements, with the most important part focusing on learning how to count the music.

  • Up-and-down, rise-and-fall swinging motion performed at a fast pace.

Quickstep is a simple dance to learn, focusing on following your partner’s foot movements. It uses a large space and includes swift steps paired with a series of kicks, jumps and runs. It is a lively and light-hearted dance for those who enjoy-packed dance movements.

Mastering Ballroom Standard dances can lead to improved posture, elegance, and grace both on and off the dance floor. These dances are also popular for wedding dances and other formal occasions.
